In 1200 there is one Church and many crowns. In 1600 there are many churches, and the crowns decide which.

Everything this course studies happens between these two maps. Watch one country at a time, not the whole continent at once.

Seven things that changed

EnglandCatholic in 1200. By 1600 the established Church of England under Elizabeth I, after the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity in 1559.
ScandinaviaDenmark and Norway official Lutheran in 1536–37, Sweden confirmed at the Uppsala Synod in 1593.
The EmpireOne Church in 1200. After the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 each prince chooses for his own territory, which is why the Empire is drawn in stripes.
ByzantiumOrthodox Constantinople still stands in 1200. Four years later Latin crusaders sack it. By 1600 the whole of it is Ottoman.
IberiaAlmohad al-Andalus holds the south in 1200. By 1600 it is one Catholic Habsburg crown from Lisbon to Barcelona.
The BalticPrussia and Lithuania are pagan in 1200, outside Christendom altogether. Ducal Prussia is the first Lutheran state anywhere in 1525; Lithuania converts Catholic in 1387.
IrelandUnder an English Protestant crown by 1600 and still overwhelmingly Catholic. The Reformation was imposed and did not take.

Where these maps come from

Two editions are offered on purpose. The published plates are scans of a printed historical atlas and carry that atlas's authority. The class renders are drawn for this course on public-domain base geography; their internal borders are teaching approximations, stated on each map, and every claim painted on them was checked against published references before they were used in class. Where the two disagree, the printed atlas wins.
