Robert of Clari was a poor knight from Picardy who went on this crusade and wrote down what he saw. He calls the army “the pilgrims” on every page. Follow them and watch what the word has to carry.

Nobody in 1204 said “crusader.” They took a vow, wore a cloth cross, and received a pilgrim’s indulgence and a pilgrim’s legal protection. Pilgrim is the word they used for themselves, which is why Clari uses it even in the chapters where the army is storming a Christian city.
They are overwhelmingly northern French, with a large Flemish contingent, a few Germans, and north Italians. The bishops Clari names in chapter LXXIII map it out for you: Soissons and Troyes in France, Halberstadt in Germany, the abbot of Loos in Flanders.
Clari himself held a fief of a few acres near Amiens and was a vassal of a vassal. That is the whole value of him. This is the view from the ranks. Villehardouin, the other eyewitness, was Marshal of Champagne and helped negotiate the contract he then defends.
Venice was the only power in Europe that could build a fleet that size. The land route through Anatolia had wrecked the two crusades before this one, so this army meant to go by sea, and the target was Egypt, because Saladin’s heirs ruled Jerusalem from Cairo.
The 1201 contract was written for an army that never showed up. The envoys ordered transport for about 33,500 men and roughly a third came. The debt was owed collectively, so the men who kept their word owed for the men who did not.
Venice had bet the whole city on the job. Dandolo says so in your reading: he suspended all commerce for a year and a half to build the ships. Venice lived on trade and had no farmland and no feudal revenue, so it needed cash rather than glory. Venetian merchants in Constantinople had also been arrested and stripped in 1171 and massacred in 1182, which is worth holding beside every decision the doge makes.

The reading ends with the army confessing, receiving communion, and sending the women out of the camp on the day before the sack. They were sincere. Work out what to do with that.
The coastline is Natural Earth data with every modern border dissolved away, because none of those lines existed in 1202 and drawing them would teach you something false. The sea route follows the ports the eyewitnesses actually name: Pola, Zara, Ragusa, Corfu, Methoni, Cape Malea, Andros, Abydos.
The dashed line is not a voyage. It is the course to Alexandria that the 1201 treaty was written for and that nobody sailed.
